Market Summary

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have no cure and present pressing therapeutic problems. They weaken the immune system and make it difficult for the body to fight off disease and infection. HIV affects well over 1 million people in the United States, and approximately 13% of those infected are unaware they had the virus. Prevention appears to be the most effective strategy at combating these ailments, and the Know@Home App, developed by researchers at Emory University, adds another prevention tool to the arsenal against HIV and AIDS.

Technical Summary

Researchers have developed an updated, user-friendly version of the HealthMindr app, called Know@Home, with a focus on promoting the prevention and treatment of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with a particular focus on men who have sex with men (MSM). Features of the app include data regarding the prevention of HIV and other STIs (sexually transmitted infection) via the promotion of condom and PrEP (preexposure prophylaxis) use and HIV/STI testing sites. Furthermore, MSM who are HIV positive or may have been exposed to HIV will have access to information regarding the attainment of ART (antiretroviral therapy) initiation as well as nPEP (nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis).
