In the U.S., approximately 625,000 people live with an ostomy and approximately 50,000 ostomy surgeries occur each year. Because of limited insurance coverage, it is often necessary for patients to use an ostomy pouch for multiple days. There is a high demand for effective deodorizers that control the odors from an ostomy pouch. Current products on the market include pouches that vent the gases to prevent ballooning and some include activated charcoal to control the odor of the vented gases. However, these products have limited efficacy because they do not address the odor associated with the content of the pouch. Other products for controlling odor can be added to an ostomy bag including granules, tablets, and liquids; however the ability of these products to control odor is short-lived, and they must be applied repeatedly by the wearer throughout the day.
As a result of heredity, disease, or trauma, part or all of the large intestine, small intestine, or bladder of a patient may have to be surgically removed. These patients receive an ostomy surgically, over which an ostomy pouch is worn to collect waste. The content of the pouch can often have a strong and unpleasant odor, which can create anxiety and self-consciousness within the wearer and significantly impact their quality of life. To control the odor, a liquid deodorizer is often applied inside the pouch, and exits the pouch each time the pouch is emptied, requiring the reapplication of deodorants through the day (up to 10 times for certain individuals). The technology provides a novel solution for deodorizing an ostomy pouch. It consists of a non-dissolvable device that attaches to the interior wall of an ostomy pouch which, when combined with a liquid deodorizer, improves odor control due to (1) its antimicrobial and circulatory properties, (2) requires application of liquid deodorant to 1-2 times per day, (3) reduces quantity of liquid deodorant required, (4) may increase pouch wear time due to less frequent, odor related changes, and (5) improves quality of life for ostomates and work environment quality for the healthcare workers who care for them.
Prototype has been developed and initial validation is complete. A clinical study involving ostomy patients is in the planning stages.
