iChoose Kidney: An iPad App for Prospective Kidney Transplant Patients

Application

Apple iOS application to aid in the decision making process for patients that need to choose between dialysis or kidney transplant.

Key Benefits
  • Provides information concerning overall risk on dialysis compared to risk with a kidney transplant based on a patient’s history.
  • Easy to use format with both 1-year and 3-year risk information.
  • Clearly displays data in an easy to understand, infographic format.
Market Summary

End-stage kidney disease (ESRD) is when the kidneys are no longer able to function at a level needed for day-to-day life. The most common causes in the U.S. are diabetes and high blood pressure.  There are 350 new cases of ESRD per million people in the US per year and these patients often must decide between treatment options. However, there are no decision support systems available for patients and healthcare providers to use when discussing and choosing treatment options, specifically between dialysis or organ transplant.

Technical Summary

The iCHOOSE mobile application is a shared patient and provider decision support tool to optimize translation of medical evidence regarding the risk of mortality of two main treatments (dialysis and organ transplant) into understandable terms. The Apple iOS app is designed to be used by nephrologists, primary care physicians, social workers, nurses, and patient educators to use with patients who have kidney disease. By providing risk prediction for mortality on dialysis of kidney transplantation in an easy to understand, infographic format, the app improves informed decisions concerning kidney failure treatment options.
