In an academic setting, radiologists often spend time educating students and medical staff using a collection of medical images. These images are often stored on hospital workstations, carried on USB thumb drives, or emailed to facilitate the sharing of interesting images for teaching and training purposes. A software suite that simplifies the generation and sharing of high quality annotated medical images has the potential to improve the teaching environment for the nearly 275,000 radiologists in the US and their students and medical residents.
RADIANT is a software package designed to improve the creation, sharing, and viewing of medical images for teaching and testing. A standalone PC application has been designed for easy creation of educational content. This software facilitates the addition of annotations and related text to medical images which can be saved in a standard format that is easily indexed and shared with mobile devices. A suite of mobile applications optimizes the display of these annotated images for handheld devices such as tablets, laptops, and smartphones. These apps simplify the viewing and manipulation of these images by taking advantage of the interactive touchscreen functionalities of mobile devices. Additionally, these apps can assess student competence through tests and quizzes. This software package can also be used to disseminate other useful teaching information such as journal articles and other images from doctors to students and medical residents.
